Luck and cricket go hand in hand and today, Daniel Hughes had lady luck to thank after surviving a close appeal in the BBL. The funniest part, however, was that he had started walking off after seeing a replay on the screen and had to be called back since the third umpire ruled in his favour.
There is a reason why Big Bash League is being touted the best T20 league in the world thanks to the high quality of cricket on offer and the amount of drama involved with each match. And as far as the drama goes, it didn’t take too long for the new edition to announce its arrival as Hughes was given not out in a way that wouldn’t make any Sydney Thunder fan happy.
On the penultimate ball of the 10th over of the innings, Hughes attempted to drive an Arjun Nair off-break delivery, but he failed to get any connection with the ball. This resulted in his momentum getting him out of the crease and he tried to drag his back foot inside the crease, but Jos Butler was quick to whip off the bails which made the entire Thunder team confident about the dismissal.Â
Being unsure about the decision, the on-field umpire asked the third umpire to check the replays which suggested that the 28-year old had nothing behind the line and had a part of his foot was on the line only. By seeing that, the New South Wales cricketer thought that he was out and instantly started walking back towards the pavilion. The on-field umpire had to stop the batsman from leaving the field since the third umpire had not made his call yet. The benefit of doubt gave him another lease of life, but he failed to make that count as Fawad Ahmed had him caught by the hands of Nathan McAndrew in the next over itself. Â
