Breaking badminton rackets or even the tennis ones are not a new thing for players in the racket sports, but it requires an extremely fast delivery to smash a bat into two parts. However, Johan Botha smashed his bat into two exactly equal parts while unloading a Mark Steketee ball to backward point.

The quality of cricket on offer in the Big Bash League may not have been comparable to its Indian counterparts, but the other innovations and the quality of broadcast have made many Indians fall for it. Yesterday, in the match between Hobart Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat in Gold Coast, Botha doubled the fun when his favourite bat was shattered while attempting a wild swing.

The game was reduced to a 19-over-a-side affair after a delayed start due to rain, but the team had a decent total to bank on after D Arcy Short’s half-century. When Johan Botha came in the 19th over, he just needed to swing his bat widely so as to get a six or four, and Heat’s Mark Steketee bowling a wide outside the off-stump didn’t help the cause either.

The ball was perfectly on the line to be smashed and Botha was genuinely happy getting a ball in that zone. However, the luck lady was not with him as Botha shattered his bat into two as pieces went flying down the pitch.

“He’s broken his bat, he’s busted in half!” FOX Cricket commentator Mark Howard exclaimed.

“I think it’s pretty obvious as he signals toward the sheds that he needs a new one.”
