In a sport where a weather can end up with two teams sharing a major international trophy – cue the 2000 Champions Trophy – Ice cricket has come as a surprise. In the first ever game, played by professionals, Grant Elliot had to pull up his pants after sliding before running out Michael Hussey.

In freezing temperatures, -7 C, the St. Moritz Ice Cricket tournament finally kicked off with Virender Sehwag’s side taking on Shahid Afridi’s team. Sehwag started the day off, with a typical shot, by hitting Shoaib Akhtar for a boundary over gully and looked to be in good touch as wickets fell at the other end.

However, amidst all the smiles, there was a moment of laughter on the last ball of the seventh over with Mahela Jayawardene having departed just a ball earlier. Afridi bowled a delivery at Hussey’s pads and the Aussie veteran guided the ball towards fine leg. However, Grant Elliot, who was fielding at the short fine leg dived and was able to stop the ball. However, as he got up to collect the ball, he realized that his trousers had come down.

As Elliot was adjusting his pants, Hussey tried to steal another run. However, the former Kiwi star was alive to the danger and showed quick reflexes to make a brilliant throw to Prior, who flicked off the bails as soon as he collected it. It was enough to send the former Aussie great packing.

Riding on Sehwag’s 62, Palace Diamonds put up a score of 164/9 in their 20 overs. However, they ended up on the losing side after Owais Shah’s 74* ensured that Royals secured the win with 28 balls to spare.
