Left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi has reset the benchmark for celebrating a wicket when he performed an actual magic trick after dismissing Wihab Lubbe in the ongoing Mzansi Super League (MSL). Despite his tricks, Shamsi’s Paarl Rocks failed to defend their total of 197 against Durban Heat.

When headlines covering sports news mentions the word ‘magic,’ it is often with reference to a moment of brilliance from an individual that caught the eye of the audience. As far as celebrating joyous moments on-field goes, sports stars have always been innovative, stylish, and sometimes even hilarious.

But when Lubbe danced down the wicket to hit a boundary, only to hand a simple catch to Hardus Viljoen inside the ring, Shamsi celebrated by pulling out a red handkerchief from his pocket before turning it into a stick.

MSL's official handle tweeted the video of the incident and captioned the post as, "WICKET! A bit of magic from @shamsi90 #MSLT20.”

Shamsi, however, could not carry forward his magic spells to turn the match in his team’s favour. After Lubbe fell in the eighth over, Dane Vilas got together with David Miller and took the game away from the Paarl Rocks. Miller fell after a quick-fire 40, but Vilas saw his team through with an unbeaten 97 off just 55 balls. Durban Heat chased down the target of 197 with seven balls to spare.
