Former West Indies World Cup-winning captain Clive Lloyd was buoyant that the present Windes team are formidable and there are quite a few quality ODI players in it. He also recalled the final of the first Men’s World Cup in 1975 that his team won after he scored a marvelous century in the game.

The great West Indies left-hand batsman, Clive Lloyd was relentless against the 1975 Australian attack that had the likes of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson firing in the bowling department. Lloyd had recalled the match when West Indies were reduced to 50/3 following which he played an elegant knock to take the team to a competitive total and eventually won the inaugural edition of the tournament.

“It was the first World Cup – they’ll never be another first – and having won it in front of a large West Indian contingent, it was quite exciting,” Lloyd told AFP.“I got a few runs – I think I got 102 - but the point is I got in there when we lost three quick wickets, so we were in a spot of bother. Rohan Kanhai and I sort of rallied the situation and then we got to a pretty good score. We had a total that we can defend and we defended it quite well. Although it was close in the end, we were always in the ascendancy.”

Clive Lloyd, the first West Indian to earn 100 international caps, had an impression that the present Windies team seem formidable when they choose the right combination. The legendary West Indian player, was also hopeful that the team would fare well in the upcoming World Cup.

“I think they can be quite a formidable side if they choose the right team.We have some good one-day players and let’s hope Mr Gayle fires in more ways than one. I think they can do very well in this competition.” said Lloyd ahead of the start of the ODI series between the West Indies and England in Barbados on Wednesday.
