Fifties from openers Lizelle Lee and Sune Luus combined with an all-round bowling display helped the South African Women thrash India Women by 105 runs in the final T20 of the series. India were bundled out for 70 in reply to South Africa’s 175, as the rain-hit series finished 3-1 to the hosts.

Sune’s decision to bat first after winning the toss proved to be a masterstroke as she and Lizelle put on a 144-run stand in less than 15 overs. Lizelle tore into the Indian attack right from the onset, en route her 47-ball 84 — which included 15 fours and a six. At the other end, her skipper took the mature route, compiling a 56-ball 62 providing an able support. Although the hosts pegged things back somewhat at the back end of the innings, they were still set a stiff target to chase.

And everything that could go wrong went wrong for the Indian batswoman as they collapsed to 13 for six inside the first seven overs of their reply. Although Veda Krishnamurthy and Arundhati Reddy - the only two to cross double digits - put up some resistance with a 49-run stand, the visitors wrapped things up in the 18th over.

The South African bowlers shared the spoils rather evenly, with Shabnim Ismail, Anne Bosch, and Nondumiso Shangase picking up two wickets each, Nadine de Klerk returning with three for 18 and Ayabonga Khaka getting rid of the Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. Lizelle took home the man-of-the-match award, closing the curtains on the rain-hit six-match series.

The two sides will now head to Vadodara for three ODIs from October 9 to 14.
