Afghanistan’s wicket-keeper batsman Shafiqullah has been handed a six-year ban by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) after the player admitted to the charges of corruption pressed against him. The charges pressed by the ACB included an attempt to fix a Bangladesh Premier League match in 2019.

In what has come as news that has rocked the cricketing world, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), on Sunday, confirmed that wicket-keeper batsman Shafiqullah has been handed a six-year ban after the player admitted guilt to the corruption charges pressed against him. In an official release on Sunday, the ACB confirmed that the multiple charges has been pressed against 30-year-old Shafiqullah, all of which the player admitted to, including involvement in corruption in an Afghanistan Premier League (APL) game in 2018 and attempt to fix a match in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in 2019.

And according to an ESPNCricinfo report, the wicket-keeper batsman had broken a total of four articles of ACB’s anti-corruption code, ‘trying to fix the outcome of a domestic match, seeking or offering bribes to fix the outcome of a domestic match, inducing a team-mate to fix a domestic match, and failing to report a corrupt approach.’

“This is a very serious offence where a senior national player is involved in the corruption of a high-profile domestic game in APL T20 2018," said the ACB's senior anti-corruption manager, Sayed Anwar Shah Quraishi, reported ESPNCricinfo.

"The player had also attempted but failed to get one of his team-mates to engage in corruption in another high-profile game during the BPL 2019."

Having made his international debut in 2009, Shafiqullah represented Afghanistan in 24 ODIs and 46 T20Is and his last appearance in an Afghanistan shirt came as recent as September 2019, in the T20-tri series involving Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.
