German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger has finally decided to call it a quit on his illustrious career at the age of 35. The 2014 World Cup winner was easily one of the best midfielders that the game has seen with the German winning the Champions League with Bayern Munich and 2014 World Cup.

Bastian Schweinsteiger announced his retirement two days after the culmination of Major League Soccer's season where his club Chicago Fire finished 17 reports the BBC. The German started his career at Bayern Munich and acquired a legend like status after 17 fruitful seasons before leaving for England. He joined Manchester United but struggled to get game-time and failed to impress either Louis Van Gaal or Jose Mourinho, eventually leaving to MLS.

"The time has now come. To the fans, you made this unbelievable time possible for me," said the German to BBC.

The German made a total of 500 appearances for the Bavarians winning 8 Bundesliga titles and one Champions League title in 2013 beating Borussia Dortmund in the final, where he played a key role. He joined Manchester United in a ÂŁ14.4 million in 2015 but failed to adapt to the Premier League, making just 13 league starts in two years. Despite his miserable time in England, he won the FA Cup in 2016. For Germany, he earned 121 caps between 2004 to 2016 and played in three World Cups, four Euros and one Confederations Cup.

But it's Schweinsteiger’s performances in the 2014 World Cup that saw him win plaudits and lift his first and only international honour with Germany. He moved to MLS side Chicago Fire in 2017 on a free transfer and announced his arrival in the grandest of style by scoring on his debut. He would go on to make 92 appearances in total for Chicago in his three years and, contributing to 8 goals, often played as a center-back for the MLS side.
