India’s most notable women footballer Oinam Bembem Devi admitted that the 'robust' domestic structure has laid the 'foundation stone' for the senior national team to progress. She feels that tournaments such as the National Championship and the IWL have helped the senior players in the long run.

The Indian Women’s football team jumped six places as per the latest rankings and are the 57th position. The eves have shown a steep rise in form over the past few months and the former International feels that the domestic competitions have helped the cause.

“Tournaments such as the Senior National Football Championships lay the foundation stone for a strong women’s national team. All the players in the national team have come through the ranks from sub-junior, junior and senior national championships," said Bembem Devi, reported scroll.in.

The Indian Women’s League (IWL) which started in 2016 has been a success in the context of Women’s football in the country. The Arjuna Awardee stated that the league provides a great platform for young footballers to play alongside the seniors.

"Young girls rubbing shoulders with the senior players in Indian Women’s League (IWL) is equally advantageous for the players in the long run,” said the two times AIFF Woman Footballer of the Year.

Statistically, in the recent past, the average age of the senior women’s team has decreased by a fair margin and Bembem Devi feels that the domestic structure is responsible for the positive effect.
