Indian sports minister Kiren Rijiju has stated that shooters who are eyeing a Tokyo-Olympic berth and the future Games will be provided with ammunition wherever they are in India. The top official visited the Dr. Karni Shooting Range, in Delhi where shooters around the region have started training.
Shooting is a sport that requires a constant supply of ammunition for training, which is generally imported from European countries. Not only were the shooting ranges shut down due to the pandemic situation, but the supply of ammo was also halted with several travel bans in place. Even though the Dr. Karni Shooting Range has opened for practice for the elite Indian shooters, many of them are reluctant to travel to Delhi following the recent spike in Covid-19 cases.
It has seen a few of them opt to train in make-shift ranges at home and Indian sports minister Kiren Rijiju has asserted that ammunition would be available to all shooters at their doorsteps so that the training is not compromised. He further added that the athletes shouldn't have to struggle which is why they'll get whatever they need to continue training.
"It is important that athletes, especially 2024 and 2028 Olympic probables get a chance to continue their training wherever they are in the country. They may not be able to visit KSSR or other academies owing to the Covid 19 situation. However, many of them practice in their home range as well as in facilities near their homes," Rijiju said, reported TOI.
"We want to ensure that their training is in no way compromised because of lack of availability of ammunition. Athletes can collect whatever they need from KSSR and other accredited academies and continue their sporting activities."
Top shooters like Apurvi Chandela, Anjum Moudgil, Saurabh Chaudhary, besides several others are training at home ranges and would benefit from the move, without having to visit the Karni Shooting Range. Following a recent visit to the range in the national capital region, Kiren Rijiju stated that the best quality ammunition for the top shooters will be made available at their doorsteps.
"Taken decision that best quality ammunition for our top shooters will be made available at their doorsteps wherever they are practicing," stated Kiren Rijiju.
