Deepak Kumar had a poor start in the finals of the 10m air rifle event, which saw him finish below both of his competitors fighting for the Olympic quota and hence miss the chance to travel to Tokyo. Despite the disappointing result, India continues to dominate by being on top of the medals tally.

Deepak Kumar failed to produce the goods in the year’s final shooting World Cup in Rio as he fell short of the Olympic quota in the 10m air rifle event on Friday. He had only barely managed to qualify for the finals, finishing in the qualifying spot with a score of 627.9 courtesy a strong finish.

With two Olympic quotas on offer, Kumar needed to finish above either Australian Dane Sampson or Slovakian Patrik Jany to secure one of them for himself and book his spot in Tokyo. However, he had an underwhelming start, as he shot a couple of 9.7 and 9.2s which ultimately ended up costing him a medal as well as the quota. He again finished brilliantly, shooting continuous 10s in the next 12 shots, but the damage had already been done.

Yu Haonan of China ended up claiming top honours as he broke the senior and junior world records with an astounding score of 252.8.  He was followed by Croatia’s Peter Gorsa, who had previously won the gold in the men’s rifle 3 positions on Thursday.

Jany claimed the bronze while Sampson finished a spot below, which saw them both win their berths to next year’s Tokyo Olympics. Regardless, India remained on top of the standings with two golds, a silver and a bronze, with the results of just five more events awaited.
