IOA president Narinder Batra and IOC member Nita Ambani submitted an official bid to host the 2023 International Olympic Committee session in Mumbai to choose the host city for 2030 Winter Olympics. The last time India had hosted the prestigious IOC session was back in 1983 in New Delhi.

The bid was submitted to IOC chief Thomas Back on the sidelines of the governing body’s 134th Session in Lausanne. Batra, who is set to be elected as a new IOC member on Wednesday said, “2022-2023 happens to be the 75th year of Indian Independence and what better way for Indian sports to celebrate the occasion by having the entire Olympic family/community in India,” reported PTI.

The IOC Session, which is the general meeting of all the members, is usually held once a year that include decisions like adoption or amendment of the Olympic Charter, election of IOC members, honorary president and honorary members, election of the President, vice-presidents and all other members of the IOC Executive Board and election of host city of Olympics.

Each member of IOC, which is around 100 at the moment, would be having one vote each and the decisions taken are final. There are provisions for extraordinary sessions too, which could be convened by the IOC President or upon the written request of at least one-third of the members.

India had previously expressed their interest to host the ongoing session but it was won by the Italian city of Milan. However, Milan later stepped back after Italy decided to bid for the 2026 Winter Games instead.
