Amit Rohidas bags Sportsperson of the Year award from Odisha Sports Journalists’ Association

Amit Rohidas has been presented with the Sportsperson of the Year Award for 2018 by the Odisha Sports Journalists’ Association (OSJA) in Bhubaneswar on Saturday. Reputed boxing coach Braja Bhusan Mohanty received the OSJA Lifetime Achievement Award for the same year in the function.

The sports journalists of Odisha came together under one roof to honour two of the most renowned sportspersons of the state on Saturday. Amit Rohidas, who was a part of the Indian men’s hockey team in the 2018 World Cup, and Dronacharya Award-winner boxing coach Braja Bhusan Mohanty were presented with the OSJA Sportsperson of the Year and Lifetime Achievement awards respectively.

The awards, carrying a purse of Rs 25,000 each, were conferred during a special function in Bhubaneswar. Sports and youth services minister of Odisha Tusharkanti Behera and first international cricketer of the state Debasis Mohanty were the esteemed guests at the function.

A product of Government Sports Hostel, Panposh, Rourkela, Rohidas has become a regular member of the Indian men’s team with 78 caps to his name so far. He was a part of the Indian team that won a gold medal in 2017 Dhaka Asia Cup and FIH Men’s Series Finals Bhubaneswar 2019; silver medal in 2013 Ipoh Asia Cup, 2018 Breda Champions Trophy, and bronze medal in 2018 Jakarta Asian Games and 2016-17 Bhubaneswar World League Finals.

Mohanty, who belongs to Ganjam district of Odisha, bagged the prestigious Dronacharya Award in 2017. He produced a number of international medalists, including Shiva Thapa, Dingko Singh, Gurucharan Singh and Vikas Krishan Yadav. Mohanty was in the Indian coach unit for boxing from 2002 to 2011.
