The Indian mixed badminton team’s campaign at the ongoing Asia Mixed Team Badminton ended with a disheartening 3-2 loss against Chinese Taipei, which meant they failed to clear Group B on Thursday. The Indian team had suffered a defeat to Singapore by an identical scoreline in their opening game.

Hopes were high in India’s second outing at the Asia Mixed Team Championships as Ashmita and George-Shukla emerged victorious in the first two matches to give India a 2-0 lead in the five-match tie. However, three consecutive defeats in the next matches meant India failed to progress from Group B and had to bow out at the end of the group stage of the competition.

Indian pair of George and Shukla showed nerves of steel to outplay the world number 14 pair of Liao Min Chun and Ching Heng with a 21-17, 17-21, 21-14 win. Assam's 19-year-old Chaliha then pulled off a hard-fought 21-18, 17-21, 21-19 win in exactly an hour.

With India in the lead with a 2-0 scoreline, world number 32 Tzu Wei and three-time Indian national champion Sourabh Verma engaged in a neck-to-neck tie which ended with the Chinese Taipei shuttler pulling off a 21-7, 16-21, 23-21 victory.

The women’s doubles pair of Chang Ching Hui and Yang Ching Tun from the opposition team beat Arathi Sara Sunil and Rutaparna Panda 21-19, 21-17. Meanwhile, the mixed doubles combination of Hsieh Pei Shan and Tseng Min Hao proved too strong for Shikha Gautam and Shlok Ramchandran, who lost 21-15, 21-14.
