Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma made a superb start with a five-under 66 to finish tied third at the end of the first day of the Italian Open in Rome on Thursday. Shubhankar, who has been playing well but has not been able to be consistent for a full week, had four birdies, an eagle and a bogey on his card. This was his third card of 66 in the last six weeks starts besides four 67s and two 68s. Yet each week, one poor round sees him slip down on the leaderboard.

His best since the tied sixth in Hong Kong in late November last year was tied 17th at BMW PGA in the UK last month, where he was in line for his best-ever finish in a European tour before falling because of a disappointing 76 in the final round.

India’s other two stars on the field, SSP Chawrasia and Gaganjeet Bhullar were placed way down in 110th place following cards of three-over 74 each. Shubhankar is trailing Finn Tapio Pulkkanen (64), who carded the lowest opening round of his European Tour with a bogey-free effort, and Slovakian Rory Sabbatini (65). He is currently sharing third place with American Kurt Kitayama, Dutchman Joost Luiten, Austrian Bernd Wiesberger, and Englishman Justin Rose.
