2012 London Olympian Sumit Sangwan made a winning start in the boxing nationals in Bellary on Wednesday. Playing in the 86kg weight category against Andhra Pradesh's Harish Prasadula. Asian Games silver-medalist Dinesh Kumar got the better of Bengal's Abhishek Shaw in the 75kg category.
As the National Boxing Championship got underway on Wednesday, known boxers Sumit Sangwan and Dinesh Kumar made winning starts in their respective weight categories. The championship which is taking place in Bellary will go on until Tuesday.
Olympian Sangwan, who is representing Haryana in the tournament, won against Andhra Pradesh’s Harish Prasadula via a unanimous decision in the 86kg category. On the other hand, 2010 Asian Games silver-medalist Dinesh got the better of Bengal's Abhishek Shaw 3-2 in the 75 kg category, according to a report in Olympics.com.
The winners of gold medals here will get an automatic entry in the World Boxing Championship in Seria, in October. Meanwhile, top boxers who participated in the Tokyo Olympics are not part of the nationals, owing to different reasons.
This time around the championship is being played in 13 different weight categories, instead of 10 -- 48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 63.5kg, 67kg, 71kg, 75kg, 80kg, 86kg, 92kg, and +92kg in accordance with AIBA rules. Another change this year is that all the bouts will be played with head guards, to protect the pugilists from getting injured before the World Championships.
