Australian Open | Wozniacki beats Halep to win first Grand Slam title; Marach-Pavic win men’s doubles trophy

Caroline Wozniacki has managed to win her first Grand Slam title after she defeated Simona Halep 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-4 in the final of the women’s singles event of the Australian Open. Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic grabbed the men’s doubles title with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Juan Cabal and Robert Farah.

The match between Wozniacki and Halep lasted for almost three hours where both the players fought hard to claim the title but the former had an upper hand in the initial stage of the first set winning the first three games. But Halep didn’t want to give up early as in the 9th game and earned a break-point which helped her equal the first set 6-6. The set entered into the tie-breaker where Wozniacki showed her dominance over Halep, who lost her two serves, and the Denmark player soon wrapped the first set on a winning note 7-6 (7-2).

The second set was a neck-to-neck affair till the score reached 3-3, and from that point, Halep didn’t give a room to her opponent to come back in the process as she managed to win the next three games and the set 6-3 which helped her stay alive in the match.

The match entered the third and decider set where Halep lost her service in the second game which gives a 2-0 lead to Wozniacki but she lost her next two services which helped Halep equal the score at 3-3. Then both players took the match to 4-4 but Wozniacki managed to win the next two games which helped her seal the set 6-4 as well as the title.

Austrian Marach and Croatia’s Pavic took one hour and 35 minutes to lift the Australian Open’s men’s doubles trophy as they defeated Colombian duo Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in a straight-set 6-4, 6-4.

The fans witnessed a neck-to-neck war between both sides as they shared the eight games when the score was 4-4. In the next game, Cabal and Farah lost their service which gave a chance to Marach and Pavic to take the lead and they soon ended it by winning 6-4.

The same thing happened in the second set as the duo of Cabal and Farah fought back but after the score was 4-4 they again lost their serve and give the match point to their opponents.
