Rogers Cup | Bopanna, Shapovalov crash out in the semi-finals in straight sets
India’s Rohan Bopanna and his partner Denis Shapovalov crashed out of the ATP Montreal Masters on Saturday after going down in straight sets in the semi-finals of the men’s doubles event in Montreal. The unseeded duo lost to the Dutch combination of Robin Haase and Wesley Koolhof.
Although it ended in straight sets, the Indo-Canadian pair took both sets to the tie-breaker in a hard-fought contest against Haase and Koolhof. The final scoreline of the match that lasted more than 90 minutes read 6-7 (3-7), 6-7.
Haase and Koolhof will now face the Spanish-Argentine pair of Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in the title clash. Granollers and Zeballos overcame the duo of Joe Sailsbury and Rajeev Ram 7-6, 3-6, 10-7 to enter the summit clash.Â
Bopanna and Shapovalov sprung a surprise straight-set win against the fourth seed French pair of Edouard Roger-Vasselin before defeating United Kingdom’s Kyle Edmund and American Taylor Fritz in straight sets in the round of 16 matches. The three-set thriller saw Bopanna and Shapovalov come back from a set down to win the tie 4-6, 6-1, 10-6.Â
However, luck was with the Indo-Canadian pair when they got a walkover in their quarter-final clash against France's Benoit Paire and Swiss Stan Wawrinka.
