Another superb day of Euro 2020. 

Who knew an international tournament would be so much fun? But that does mean the end of the round of 16 and after the last five days of utterly majestic, chaotic, superb, marvellous, heartbreaking and downright insane football, we must now move on.

I know, it’s sad and nobody wants to do it but we’ll always remember the summer of 2021, when the round of 16 was what defined Euro 2020. That is until the quarter-finals come and stun us all and given the fixture list, that starts from the 2nd of July, a few shocks and awes are most definitely on the card.

And the question might finally be answered, the one on everyone’s mind, the one on the planet’s tongue but the question that nobody wants to ask, so I shall. Is it finally coming home? We won't know until Saturday, so might as well enjoy the two-day break. Until next time, this is goodnight, goodbye and arrivederci.

Sweden head coach Janne Andersson:  "We played a pretty good match. In the second half we had chances to settle it. But it goes into extra time and after the red card we just defended. We did it well so it’s probably my most bitter experience in football, to be knocked out so close to the end.”

On the mood within the squad:  ”Everyone’s disappointed, quiet. Just silence. And there’s nothing to say, because nothing helps. Time will have to heal this. It was brutal.”

On Sweden's Euro 2020: ”We’ll have to fly home tonight and go our separate ways tomorrow. Suddenly it all ends, this great thing we’ve been building together. We’ve come close to achieving something really good. We leave this with flying colours, as Sweden hadn't passed a group stage since 2004.”

On his sideline tiff with Andriy Shevchenko: "They managed to whip it in towards the end. We managed to keep them away well, but I thought we maybe should have kept it away. I was a little bit tired. I felt they were diving a bit towards the end, but I was complaining to the fourth official. He didn't agree with me."

Ukraine head coach Andriy Shevchenko: "Both teams played very well. It was an interesting match. Neither side wanted to lose so we got this drama at the end. With this performance and commitment, our team has deserved the love of the whole country."

"We knew how our team should play from the first minutes. We knew who could strengthen us [during the game]. The plan we had developed has worked well."

"We decided to protect the wide areas more. We asked our midfielders to work harder and changed Yarmolenko's position. We tried to control the game but it wasn't that way from time to time. But the team has fully fulfilled our plan."

On the support at Hampden Park: I'm so grateful to everyone who came here to support us. My family, my kids were here. I wanted to achieve this result so much. I thank my team for all their efforts, for the heroism they have shown tonight."

Ukraine's Artem Dovbyk: "I don't think of myself as a hero, even though everyone tells me I am. I'm just beginning to come back to my senses. I think I won't sleep tonight. This night will be long."

On scoring his first goal for Ukraine: "It must be fate. I don't have words [to describe it]. It was just because of circumstances that I had to go on the pitch. The coach said I should help the team and wait for my chance. He instructed me to be in their penalty area all the time and wait for the right moment."

Sweden's Dejan Kulusevski: ”This isn’t how it was supposed to end. I said last night, ’football is cruel’, while watching France. Today it was our time to experience that. Football gives a lot but it takes even more.”

”We created enough to win it in regular time. I’d hoped we could have taken it to penalties, but when they score in the 120th minute – that’s a knife in the heart.”

Ukraine's Oleksandr Zinchenko: “First of all I would like to celebrate today, we are writing history. I would like to thank the supporters during this game, after the first three games we deserved criticism but we came back and did what we wanted. Unbelievable emotions inside.

“The power is not how you punch, the power is how you stand up. We knew it would be a tough game, it doesn’t matter about the tactics or how we play, we have to win. We have to achieve this. People who were supporting us during this competition deserve this."

On England: “I watched the first half before the game, this team is showing some class in this competition with a lot of superstars on the field. I would love to see my team-mates as soon as possible because I miss them.”

Sweden's Emil Forsberg: "It’s rough. I thought we were the better team, we conceded an unnecessary goal and then hit the post and the crossbar. We deserved better, but that wasn’t to be today."

On playing 10 v 11: "Of course it’s tough to play extra time outnumbered. We battled as a team and promised to not give up. Then with the last play, a cross and a header, they score. It’s incredibly tough.”

Germany head coach Joachim Low: "This is a huge disappointment for us all. We hoped to achieve a lot more at this tournament and the belief in this team was high. In matches like this it is imperative to use the few chances that you get.

"Timo Werner and Thomas Müller unfortunately couldn't score from their opportunities, so it feels pretty bad that we are out."

On the future of this team: "Some of these players will be at their peak for UEFA EURO 2024. They will be more mature, more experienced and more ruthless."

On his future: "After 15 years in this job, with all the responsibility that is involved, taking a break is necessary. There will be a time when you find new energy for something else. At the moment, I do not have any concrete plans." 

Germany's Manuel Neuer: "We had a huge chance today to get past a strong team. We failed to take it and are massively disappointed. It was difficult for our attackers to make something work with the long balls we sent forward. Our diagonal passes didn't work out either, so we couldn't hurt England as much as we wanted to."

Germany's Toni Kroos: "You can imagine how bitter this tastes. It was a balanced match until they scored the first goal. Both teams cancelled each other out. The efficiency made the difference today. England had almost no chances until they made it 1-0. Our performance was solid until then, but the goal changed everything."

While we wait for reactions from Sweden vs Ukraine, here are some from England vs Germany starting with England head coach Gareth Southgate:

"We haven’t put in a semi-final followed by a quarter-final [at successive tournaments] since 1968 either. So these players keep writing history and they’ve got the chance again – we’ve only ever been to one European Championship semi-final so, again, they’ve got the chance to do something really special."

On the incredible support at Wembley: "I’ve been here with a full house and not heard it anywhere near the levels the crowd found today. They were behind every challenge, they were behind every time we pressed the ball, behind every run we had.

"The energy was incredible in the stadium so to be able to send them home feeling as they do tonight, to hear them at the end … you can’t beat a bit of Sweet Caroline, can you? That’s a belter, really.

"And to know that so many millions of people, after such a difficult year, can have that enjoyment that I know we’ll have given them today is very special."

On the tactical approach:  "We know there have always been questions following the World Cup about us against a big team. We knew that Germany, with their experience, would dictate the speed of certain passages of the game, the possession.

"We knew Kroos would organise the game and we'd have to be patient. What pleased me most was that, we’ll always have passion and we’ll always have heart, we played with brains today."

"We pressed at the right moments. We wanted to be, man for man, aggressive in our pressure. The wing-backs really did that well and set the tone. The forwards picked the right moments to go and to stay.

"Then we found a nice balance of being brave with the ball, to keep possession in our own half at times – our defenders are exceptional at that. But also then the right moments to really go quickly and counter and that was a real step forward for us."

Ukraine celebrates as Sweden watch on and you've got to feel for them. Emil Forsberg has been superb at the Euro 2020 but you've got to give credit where it is due. 

Andriy Shevchenko's plan worked, maybe not perfectly, but it worked although they'll need more than that against England in Italy. Btw, they've also equalled their biggest achievement at a major stage, so that is a bonus I suppose.

FULL-TIME AND UKRAINE ARE THROUGH..

Artem Dovbyk is mobbed by his teammates. That's his first international goal for Ukraine.

What a moment for him to get it. Sweden are out and they look shocked. Euro 2020 is awesome.

Hail mary time for Sweden. Worth a repeat. Possible?

Andriy Shevchenko and Jan Annderson have a little tussle on the sidelines with the Swedish head coach indicating a dive of some sort.

The only chance in extra-time and they've scored but there's a VAR check..

Artem Dovbyk with a Haris Seferovic-esque header to break Swedish hearts. That's a lovely lovely goal but the cross was marvellous from Zinchenko and Dovbyk makes no mistake.

Into three minutes of added time..

Marvellous recovery from Roman Bezus as he leaps back to his feet and sprints along the sidelines to rejoin the game.

And Roman Bezus is on the floor, in pain. Not sure what happened but replays show that Filip Helander and the Ukraine midfielder had a coming together. Not a foul but he looks really hurt.

Great little reverse ball from Emil Forsberg down the middle of the field, inside the Ukraine half, but Robert Quaison doesn't read the idea and the ball rolls through for Bushchan to save.

Change for Ukraine. Serhyi Sydorchuk is off and replaced by Roman Bezus.

Yeah, that's a piss-poor idea from Ruslan Malinovskyi. He opts to, from 30 yards out, hammer the ball low and hard into the middle and it comes off. The daisy cutter rips through the wall, but is blocked by the first man and falls for Zinchenko on the left.

His cross into the box is blocked and cleared by Forsberg.

Marcus Berg and Robert Quaison pressure Malinovskyi but the Ukraine star somehow wins a free-kick on the left. This is in a decent area for the Atalanta man to swing in from...

The game moves on as Berg is escorted off the field. He looks fine, or so it seems, and should be back on soon.

CHANCE FOR UKRAINE!! Superbly done by Sydorchuk as he backheels a pass, inside the area, into Karavayev's path but Marcus Berg is there and slides across to block. He just about manages that but Karavayev's knee clatters into the forward's face. He needs medical treatment.

WHAT A CHANCE FOR UKRAINE!!! Artem Dovbyk is sent scampering behind the Swedish back-line by Malinovskyi and he's got a golden chance to hit the net. That's game over for Sweden but the forward scoops his effort well over Olsen and his crossbar, with the ball hitting the stands.

The flag does go up but that was a lazy finish. Not done at all.

All Ukraine at the moment. All Ukraine and Sweden are just about holding on.

CHANCE FOR UKRAINE!!! Helander falls to the ground while trying to clear a looped ball into Makarenko, and he touches the ball. But the Ukraine man also slips and hits the deck which allows Sweden to clear...just about clear.

That triple offensive change from Sweden have been seen very little but here's Robert Quasion as he presses a defender on the far left, nearly wins the ball but concedes a foul.

Yup, exactly the way I expected that to go.

Knockout blow from Ukraine or a rope-a-dope from Sweden? We'll see.

HALF-TIME AND THE GAME IS STILL LEVEL..

Ukraine have a chance here. Question is, will they take it?

Down the other side and Andriy Yarmolenko hits the deck and takes his time to get back up. Not sure why he was rolling and screaming so much, there was nothing in that challenge.

Kryvtsov twists his ankle and forces a stoppage in play but the defender wants to solider on and the game continues.

Emil Krafth launches a throw from the right, Ukraine barely clear and it bounces for Emil Forsberg but the midfielder shanks his volley into the stands. A looping shot that was nowhere close to goal.

We should have added time upon added time but I'm not sure how much. A decent chunk..

Corner number one is just terrible from Malinovskyi but they win corner number two. Ukraine work this short, send a cross in eventually and once again this is dealt with rather easily by Sweden.

Into three minutes of added time..and Emil Krafth seems fine to continue. As play goes on, Besedin is helped gingerly around the perimeter with applause as he passes by the Ukraine fans.

Corner for Ukraine but stoppage in play as Zinchenko's cross is blocked by Krafth's face and he needs medical treatment before we can continue.

Ukraine try something as Yarmolenko leathers a pass towards Zinchenko on the left, he collects and plays it to Vyktor Tsygankov. The subs flies down the outside left, dinks a ball towards the far right post but Karavayev's shot is wide.

All hands to the defensive pump for Sweden now and they need to survive until penalties but Ukraine have a chance here to make something happen.

I'm sorry, he may have gotten the ball but he could have broken Besyedin's knee and potentially ended his career there. The follow through was horrendous, and no I'm not posting videos or photos of that because it was terrible. The leg bent...

Changes will be made for both teams.

Sweden make a defensive change with Kristoffer Olsson replaced by Filip Helander.

VAR DECISION: RED CARD FOR SWEDEN.

Marcus Danielson is off and while he did get the ball, that's a potential career ending injury.

He went into the knee of Besyedin. That follow through was terrible, ouch.

VAR DECISION: REF OVER TO THE SCREEN PLEASE..

Yup, Sweden are down to ten. This is knee height from the defender and a definite red.

VAR CHECK ONGOING...

If the referee is sent to check this, he is walking. He is definitely walking.

That should help the game and Marcus Danielson has gone into the book for a high high tackle on Artem Besyedin. This could be a red card challenge..

Sweden have found a gear to shift into as they venture outside their own half for the first time in extra-time. They seem almost shocked that Ukraine are in this game given the fact that Sweden were heavy favourites to win this.

More changes for Ukraine. Taras Stepanenko is off and replaced by Evgeny Makarenko.

All Ukraine as I type with Sweden on the back-foot. They seem happy to be there at the moment and that might be them recharging their batteries. 

Slow tempered start to extra-time. Can't really blame them, they look dead-tired out there.

Change for Ukraine, at the start of extra-time, and it's a change up-top. It was a last-minute thing with Roman Yaremchuk replaced by Artem Besyedin.

FULL-TIME AND WE'RE OFF TO EXTRA-TIME..

Some very very tired players out there. We've still got about four subs for Ukraine and three for Sweden left on the cards which makes playing for extra-time very weird. But then again, this is a knockout game and nobody wants to lose a knockout game. Everyone wants to win one.

Into two minutes of added time..

Corner for Sweden, Seb Larsson takes but Ukraine deals with it without a fuss.

CHANCE FOR SWEDEN!!! Perfect run from Dejan Kulusevski as the ball downfield is played right into his path, he's broken past the line but it just doesn't fall for him. He eventually forces it and the shot is blocked for a corner.

A few people can't watch this game, so they've decided to leave. Guess they've forgotten it's not a group game but a knockout one where we get the joy of 30 added minutes. Plus penalties if needed.

Neither side seems keen on making a mistake as they prioritize safety here. Kinda sad given just how chaotic this game got at the start of the second half but extra-time beckons..

A yellow card for Emil Forsberg...and replays show it was for nothing with the midfielder running with his hands out and catches Stepanenko. Huh..

Double change for Sweden as they swap out their full-backs. 

Ludwig Augustinsson and Mikael Lustig are off, Emil Krafth and Pierre Bengtsson replace them.

Problems for Sweden as Ludwig Augustinsson hits the deck and it does look like cramp. Not sure but either way, they're preparing a double sub including Emil Krafth, a right-back.

Tempo has dropped considerably and that has lead me to believe that both sides are, maybe, playing and considering the prospect of extra time. No subs beyond Malinovskyi for either side so far.

Yellow card for Andriy Yarmolenko for yammering at the referee despite the fact that the official gave Ukraine a foul after he was tugged to the floor by Ekdal. He wanted a card for the Swede, I believe, and continues to shout at the referee.

The words "why" were formed more than once, says my, once read a booklet on, lip-reading skills.

Emil Forsberg and Dejan Kulusevski try to work a lovely, intricate move on the edge of the box but the latter's first touch, after two passes, is just a little heavy and Ukraine clear.

A reminder, as the possession metronome ticks towards Sweden's side, that the winner of this game wins the chance to face England in Rome. That's right, it's the grand prize, a quarter-final against the mighty English in mighty Rome. Sounds fun.

Still all Ukraine on the ball but they're still struggling to threaten. Ruslan Malinovskyi has failed to do anything since walking on and nobody is more upset than me. He was a joy to watch for Atalanta this last season but just hasn't been able to do it tonight. So far.

Sweden were bossing this game with lot of possession and a lot of passes but now Ukraine seems to have taken over although they're not causing any problems. Hopefully that changes..

Oh it seems Dejan Kulusevski was booked for something or the other a few minutes ago. Apologies for missing it but I was still reeling from that Forsberg post clattering.

A lull in the game as Ukraine force a couple of minutes of sterile possession in order to calm the game down and take stock of everything. Chances have arrived for both sides but neither seem capable of taking them...or the goal doesn't want to be scored for Forsberg.

OH MY WORD, EMIL FORSBERG!! The Swede collects the ball on the far left, drops a shoulder to beat one man, drives infield, beats another, cuts towards the far left edge of the box and curls one towards the top right corner.

He gets it right....with the ball clattering off the crossbar and falling back into play. Had that been on target, Bushchan would have had no chance at all.

Corner number two comes to nowt, Ukraine break and this is a chance.

Ruslan Malinsovskyi leads the break after being fed by Zinchenko, takes his time and slides it right towards Yaremchuk eventually. He continues the trend and finds Yarmolenko, who drives a tame effort into Olsen's hands. He scuffed that.

Corner for Sweden and Emil Forsberg will take. He leathers this deep towards the far right post, it falls for Dejan Kulusevski and his eyes twinkle.

The forward dances his way into the box, drops a shoulder, and absolutely hammers one towards the top left corner but Bushchan tips it over for a corner.

A quiet spell for once in the second half as Sweden work the ball about. Ukraine are holding them at bay with a solid looking defensive shape and yet, they seem to be just about open enough for a chance to be created.

Another fast-break from Ukraine as they fly down the left, Zinchenko sends a cross into the middle but it falls for Sydorchuk on the far right. He collects and waltzes into the area before trying to dink a cross over Olsen for Yarmolenko. The keeper reads and collects.

Change for Ukraine. Mykola Shaparenko is replaced by Ruslan Malinovskyi.

A simple ball over the top unleashes Alexander Isak and the forward is flying through into the area, but sends the shot wide in the end. The flag also goes up to add to the issue but that was a chance for Isak, even if he was offside, to score.

More chaos inside the Ukraine 18 yard box. Ludwig Augustinsson flies down the left, and leathers a cross into the middle for someone to get there but that turns out to be a man in blue. Matvyienko, I believe, and he just about clears it before Kulusevski could make it work.
