R Ashwin, widely regarded a gentleman for the way he has always conducted himself on and off the field, took a personal jibe at Herschelle Gibbs by bringing up his involvement in the 2000 match-fixing scandal amidst light social media bantering. Later, he deleted the tweet writing it off as a joke.

Light public banter between public figures has become a regular norm on Twitter nowadays with the social media platform gaining more and more prominence with every passing week. However, we have often found harmless banter getting blown way out of proportion to end up becoming a fodder for public entertainment.

Something similar happened today when the former South African cricketer decided to aim a sly dig at India’s off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, totally unbeknownst of the fact that the Tamil Nadu cricketer was incapable of enjoying a joke.

It all started with Ashwin posting about his Nike running shoes as he expressed his impatience in flaunting them the next time he was on the field. Given the universally known fact that Ashwin isn’t the fastest player on the field, Gibbs stated that he hopes Ashwin would ‘run a bit faster now’ with those shoes on him.

However, to everyone’s surprise, Ashwin seemed to take it personally and instead of going for a witty repartee, resorted to a cheap dig at Gibbs’ past, going totally out of context to remind him of his involvement in the 2000 match-fixing scandal.

The team was led by Hansie Cronje then, who had played a significant part in the deal with bookies. Though Gibbs didn’t follow the instructions after being approached by his skipper, he was eventually suspended for six months for getting involved in that scandal.

However, while Gibbs soon realized that the bantering was not worth prolonging and decided to stop, the Twitterati wasn’t going to spare Ashwin for showing such insensitivity.

Ashwin was consequently forced to delete his tweet and later had to defend his remark by stating it as a joke, and even suggested they should dine out sometime.
