Juan Martin del Potro picks the Fab four as favourites for Wimbledon
Juan Martin del Potro has suggested that the quartet of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray are still the favourites to win Wimbledon just like they were in 2008-09. Del Potro further added that they are still at an excellent level and draw a huge crowd to the court.
The Fab Four quartet of Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal
Federer has made a terrific comeback this year with back to back wins at the Australian Open, Miami Open, and Indian Wells Masters with his latest success coming at the Halle Open event in the run-up to the Wimbledon. Meanwhile, Nadal was in red-hot form on clay bagging his record tenth title at the Roland Garros. On the other hand, Murray has been struggling this season but is expected to fire at the Grand Slam event with Djokovic tasting some success at last recently by winning the grass-court Eastbourne Open after a prolonged slump.
Argentine tennis star Juan Martin del Potro pointed out the obvious while noting the commendable returns made by the quartet.
"They have returned to be the Fantastic Four, as they have been throughout their careers," Del Potro told ATPWorldtour.com, who is gradually continuing his comeback towards the Top 10 of the Emirates ATP Rankings.
"I think it's something that appeals to every tennis fan.
"I've always played good tennis at Wimbledon. I also have great memories of the Olympic Games in this stadium. Wimbledon is a tournament that always brings surprises in the first rounds and I think it's also nice that we have the same top seeds that we had in 2008 or 2009. They are at an excellent level." he added.
The Argentine could face Djokovic in the third round of Wimbledon with the Serb having the upper hand with a 3-0 record over del Potro this season with wins at hard courts of Acapulco and Indian Wells followed by a quarter-final victory on clay at TP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Rome.
However, the 28-year old will get to the third round after overcoming a gritty Thanasi Kokkinakis who will enter the competition at the back of a stunning win against World No. 6 Milos Raonic in the first round of at Queen's.
"He is strong and hits very hard, although I do not know him that well. I think it's going to be a typical match on grass, where the serve is going to be essential and with very few break points."
The Argentine will return to the court after his last match in the third round of French Open against Andy Murray and insisted that he is reaching the level required by his standards to compete in the tournament.
"In training, what I try to do is hit the returns harder. When you put yourself on defence it is more difficult to win the point and the ball gets quite heavy, causing the game to slow down.
"I'm still there with an acceptable position [in the Emirates ATP Rankings]. I'm still improving in my comeback. It's a little out of the ordinary to what I'm used to in my career, but I'm calm and I know that my level will return." he concluded.
