Hashim Amla calls it a day from international cricket
After going through a torrid run of form since the start of 2018, South Africa opener Hashim Amla has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. After making his debut back in 2004, Amla has scored over 18,000 runs which is laced with as many as 55 centuries.
Hashim Amla’s form became a cause for concern for the South African team, especially in Test cricket, as he averaged less than 30 in the last two years. Even though he averaged a tad under 47 in the World Cup, propelled by a match-winning 80* against Sri Lanka in what has now turned out to be his last ever international match, Amla never looked comfortable and was under fire from many quarters. The need of a fresh start for South Africa after the world cup debacle seemed to have moved him in the direction of announcing his retirement from the sport.
In a statement, the 36-year-old thanked his fans and all the players for standing by his side in his lows as he decided to walk out of the rigours of international cricket for good.Â
“Firstly, all glory and thanks to the Almighty for granting me this Proteas journey which has been nothing but a joy and privilege. I learnt many lessons during this incredible ride, made many friends and most importantly shared in the love of a brotherhood called 'protea fire'," Amla said in a statement, reported Cricbuzz.
"I would like to thank my parents for their prayers, love and support, it is their shadow over me that enabled me to play for years under the Protea sun. Also, My family, friends and agent, my team mates and every member of the support staff throughout this incredible journey. A heartfelt thank you to every one of you. The fans for energizing me when times were tough, and for celebrating with me when we succeeded together. Siyabonga South Africa!

While he had maximum success in ODIs, giving Virat Kohli a run for his money as far as fastest to reach the 1000-multiple landmarks are concerned, his records in Tests also spoke volumes of his quality. With 9282 runs in red-ball cricket, he has 28 centuries, and unbeaten 311 against England at The Oval in 2012 gave him a place among the pantheon of greats.
