Gurpreet Singh and Sunil Kumar have managed to bag silver medals in their respective Greco-Roman categories in the ongoing Asian Wrestling Championships in Xi’an, China. With the addition of two more medals, India’s medal tally has moved now up to of 14, which includes one gold medal as well.

Gurpreet suffered a 0-8 loss against Korea’s Hyeonwoo Kim in the 77kg final on the penultimate day of the competition in Greco-Roman wrestling and had to settle with only a silver medal from the continental event. The Indian wrestler did have some good fights prior to the summit clash as he managed to get the better of Bakhit Sharif K Badr of Qatar 10-0 in the quarters and Tamerlan Shadukayev of Kazakhstan 6-5 to bag a spot in the final.

In the final bout of the 87kg weight category, passive efforts by both the players led to some confusion before referee declaring Iran’s Hossein Ahmad Nouri as the winner and Sunil also had to be satisfied with a second position finish as well. The Indian wrestler had a wonderful fight in the top eight battle against Tokhirdzhon Okhonov of Tajikistan by winning it 14-7. He did well to beat Kazakh wrestler Azamat Kustubayev in the semi-final bout.

In 140kg category, Prem had a chance of winning a medal as he went into the bronze medal play-off bout but failed to do so. After getting pinned in the bout, the Indian wrestler was beaten by Kazakhstan’s Damir Kuzembayev 0-5. In the 55kg and 63kg weight categories, Manjeet and Vikram Krushnath Kurade went down on the top eight round and failed to progress ahead and create any chances of winning a medal for India.

India now has a total of 14 medals which includes one gold, five silver and eight bronze medals at the continental event in China.
