Vietnam Open | Siril Verma, Sourabh Verma go through, Shubhankar Dey bows out
India’s Siril Verma stunned top seed, Darren Liew of Malaysia, while Sourabh Verma had to dig deep to get the better of Japan’s Kodai Naraoka. However, a shock defeat for third seed Shubhankar Dey at the hands of unseeded Malaysian Jia Wei Tan saw him being crashed out of the tournament.
India’s Siril Verma won a hard-fought three-game contest 17-21, 21-19, 21-12 to stun top seed Darren Liew of Malaysia. Ranked 97th in the world, Siril will now enter the third round of the Vietnam Open after getting past the 22nd ranked Malaysian after battling hard for 52 minutes in the second-round tie. Siril will next take on Chinese qualifier Lei Lan Xi for a place in the quarterfinals of the BWF Tour Super 100 tournament.
Another Indian, second seed Sourabh Verma made it to the third round of the tournament after having to dig deep against the Japanese Kodai Naraoka. Verma battled the Japanese to win the match 22-20 22-20 in 54 minutes. Sourabh will face Japan’s Yu Igarashi next.
A shock defeat meant it was curtains for third seed Shubhankar Dey, who suffered a straight-game 11-21 17-21 defeat at the hands of unseeded Malaysian Jia Wei Tan. India also bowed out of the men’s doubles event after the pair of Arun George and Sanyam Shukla lost 13-21 11-21 to top seeds Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han of Chinese Taipei.
