Simon Doull was in appreciation for Shai Hope as his partnership with Shimron Hetmyer took the Windies side to a win in the first ODI in Chennai. He further talked about how intelligence paid off for the Windies in the opening game, with Hope playing out the danger while Hetmyer was aggressive.

While Shimron Hetmyer stole the limelight in the 1st ODI game against India, his partner at the other end Shai Hope was holding the end frustrating the Indian bowlers. The Windies side could have been very well 5/2 in the fifth over if both Hope and Hetmyer decided to play the aggressive hand in the innings, which could have proved costly for the tourists.

However, Hope’s slow yet well-constructed innings combined with the Hetmyer brilliance was the architect of their victory. Simon Doull, talking on Cricbuzz live said “Let’s give credit to Shai Hope. Both Hetmyer and Hope batted excellently together. Hope’s innings from the other end was perhaps what gave Hetmyer the license to be aggressive. That is the beauty of their partnership”

Despite only scoring 36 off the powerplay, Windies built a partnership that eventually led them to the victory. In the overs leading to 20, the tourists scored 57 runs, out of which bulk of the scoring came from the Hetmyer end and further added 68 in the next ten overs. Progressively, the run-rate kept increasing for the tourists as they chased the target in the 48th over of the innings.

“That is exactly what this West Indies team have to do, build a team around these talents. If Hope can hold one end, the likes of Nicholas Pooran and Kieron Pollard can play aggressively at the end for the team,” concluded Doull.
