The next edition of the IPL is set to be held over a longer duration with the reduction in day matches being a high possibility. The BCCI is planning for each team to play only one afternoon game with fewer double-headers on weekends as the tournament is set to be held over a 60-day window.

Indian Express revealed that the upcoming editions of the IPL might have fewer day games than expected. This will increase the duration of the entire tournament. In 2017 former BCCI interim President Sunil Gavaskar had proposed the early finishing of games held at night and the decision was backed by then IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla.

The BCCI is keen to have 7 pm starts on the night games so that they do not end up going on till late. More about the same will be informed to the franchises when the IPL Governing Council meet up in the coming months. Fans face difficulty in travelling back from stadiums when the games end late. One such game in Bangalore ended as late as 1:27 am. When asked informally, many teams were in favour of early starts as they will help the games to finish early, thereby ruling out the possibility of any inconvenience.

“There is a plan in place of playing more games at night. If it is passed, each team will have to play only one game in the afternoon. Teams who play in the north face heatwaves and conditions get more difficult," sources said.

There is a plan of using all 60 days instead of wrapping up the IPL in 45 days. The IPL GC has to approve it,” sources further added.
