Former BCCI president N Srinivasan has strongly hit back at the allegations made by Dilip Vengsarkar that he was sacked from chief selector role because of backing Virat Kohli over Subramaniam Badrinath. Srinivasan rubbished Vengsarkar’s comments calling them “false” and “motivated”.

Yesterday, Vengsarkar, during a function in Mumbai, had revealed that he was sacked from his role at the national selection committee in 2008 when he advocated for the inclusion of Kohli ahead of Badrinath. But, that move didn’t go down well with Srinivasan and at the end, the grudge resulted in his sacking as the chairman of the selection committee. However, Srinivasan, after getting to know about the comments, hit back at the legendary Mumbai batsman and stated that the allegation was completely wrong and don't have any basis.

"At the outset, I deny this as completely false, motivated and without any basis. It is a pity that Vengsarkar is trying to cast aspersions on me. I find it unbecoming and highly unprofessional of a former selector to act in such a manner," Srinivasan was quoted as saying by ToI.

The then chief selector saw Kohli’s batting in the Emerging Nations Cup in Australia where Kohli played a brilliant innings as an opener and that was sufficient for him to bring Kohli in the team for the Sri Lanka tour in 2008. Srinivasan pointed out the fact that both Badrinath and Kohli had featured in that particular series and that’s why his comments were wrong. The former BCCI president also went on to add that he was a fan of Vengsarkar and always stood by him.

"All of us have been great admirers of the batting skills of Vengsarkar. If I recall, for his benefit match back in 1994 - India Cements had contributed Rs 1 lakh which at that time was a princely sum," he said.

"I have always respected him as a cricketer. I am sorry that he talks like this.”

Vengsarkar was the vice-president of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) in 2008 and at the same time, he was selected to be the chairman of the selection committee. Srinivasan revealed that in a working committee meeting in August 2008, it was suggested that anyone who would be the office-bearer of the BCCI or any of the member units, wouldn’t be considered for the selector's role.

"Vengsarkar continued as the vice-president of the MCA until 2010 and again in 2014 as he could not have been considered at all for the post of selector. The decision was clear - you can't be on both sides. This is a simple rule and he was aware of it. He is trying to create some controversy by suggesting that I was behind his removal when I was the treasurer of the BCCI," said Srinivasan.
