MS Dhoni gave me lot of confidence on debut, reveals Jasprit Bumrah
Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah revealed that Dhoni had given him lots of confidence on his debut by praising him for his performance, after he bowled well in the death overs. Bumrah added that he has learnt to patiently wait for the results and keep doing the right things consistently.
MS Dhoni shook Indian cricket when he announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, in a Dhoni-esque manner, taking to the Instagram to disclose the big news. Most of the current Indian players have some fond memory or the other with the former Indian skipper, MS Dhoni as they more or less, started their career under his able leadership.
One of the world's best fast bowlers and India's kingpin, Jasprit Bumrah revealed how Dhoni gave him 'freedom' and confidence when he made his debut on the Australia tour in 2016, where he impressed one and all with his impeccable yorkers.
"Well, it was his decision, and everybody respects it. At a personal level, I made my debut under him and he gave me a lot of confidence. Not many people know that Mahi bhai had never seen me bowl, at any level. In my debut game, I was going to bowl in the death overs and I asked him 'can I bowl yorkers?' and he was like 'no, don't bowl yorkers'. He thought since it was a difficult delivery, I wouldn't be able to pull it off.
"I told him 'in death overs, I don't know what else to do'. So, anyway, I went ahead and did my thing and then he came to me and was like "I didn't know this at all. You should've come earlier, we would've won the whole series". Here was me, making a nervous debut and the captain telling me "you could've won us this series". He gave me a lot freedom," Bumrah told Times of India.
Bumrah made his Test debut in the 2018 Cape Town Test against South Africa. He has performed exceptionally well for Indian in Tests be it in South Africa, England, West Indies, or Australia, with him peaking in the tour Down Under where India registered their first Test series win in Australia.
The right-arm paceman recalled how wickets are hard to come by even when you are bowling to the best of your abilities. But, now he has learned that you need to be patient and keep doing the right things and then the results finally come.
"Even in Australia, it was the same. In certain situations, I thought I was bowling well. At Perth, for instance, I felt it was the fastest that I ever bowled. I felt like was bowling at 155, 158. But in Perth, I did not get a lot of wickets. So, what had 2018 taught me - just keep doing to the right things, sometimes things will click, sometimes you'll have to wait longer. Results will come. In fact, I remember saying this in the press conference after the Perth Test that it was probably the best I had every bowled then, even if the wickets didn't come as expected. Wickets came in the next Test, at MCG. In hindsight, I bowled better at Perth, I got better results at MCG. At the end of the day, your account will get tallied," the 25-year-old said.
