Confederations Cup 2017 | Germany romps past Mexico to advance into the final

A young German side thrashed Mexico 4-1 to set up a final clash with Chile at St. Petersburg on Sunday, while Mexico will take on Portugal on Sunday for a third-pace match. Debutant Leon Goretzka scored a brace in the early minutes of the game to help Germany seal the finals berth.

Germany took the game to the Mexican defence at the start itself and a concentration lapse by captain Hector Moreno saw Leon Goretzka seize the possession at the halfway line before passing it to Benjamin Henrichs who then returned the ball to Goretzka. Goretzka subsequently slotted the ball into the net six minutes into the match to give Germany the perfect start in the semi-final.

22-year old Goretzka was once again on the scoresheet, two minutes later, after Timo Werner's perfect pass found the young striker who fired the ball home under the legs of goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa to increase the lead to 2-0. Soon after, the German side had a third opportunity, but it was squandered away by Werner, who hit the shot straight into the hands of Ochoa.

Mexico then regrouped and started attacking Marc-Andre Ter Stegen at the German goal. However, Stegen was alert to the task of countering the attack as he saved a shot from Giovani Dos Santos and followed it up with a diving block to save the follow-up shot from Giovani's brother, Jonathan Dos Santos. The Mexican striker Javier Hernández later had an easy chance to pull one back for his team when he just had Ter Stegen to beat. However, Hernandez fired a shot that resulted in the ball going over the goalpost rather than under it. 

Raul Jiménez was the next to have a go at the German goal but Ter Stegen once again stood his ground to deny Mexico, while Germany tripled their lead in the 59th minute when Timo Werner tapped the ball in after a brilliant move from the duo of Julian Draxler and Jonas Hector. 

However, Germany ended up on the receiving end in the 89th minute when a qucikly taken free kick by Mexico caught them off-guard and Marco Fabian found acres of space to fire in a long-range swerving shot that finally went past Ter Stegen. 

Germany ended the game on dictating terms with Amin Younes scoring in stoppage time to complete the 4-goal Fiesta and will next take on Chile in te finals at St. Petersburg, while Mexico will take on Portugal at Moscow in a third-place match.
