Robert Lewandowski has revealed he is mentally preparing for retirement as his Barcelona contract expires at season’s end. The 37 year old says he could retire within one to four years without pressure. Despite uncertainty, he began 2026 by scoring off the bench in a 2-0 La Liga win over Espanyol and now heads to the Spanish Super Cup in good form.

When the conversation shifts toward the closing stages of an elite career, Robert Lewandowski has openly acknowledged that he is mentally preparing for life after football as uncertainty surrounds his future at Barcelona. The 37 year old striker is out of contract at the end of the current season and, at present, a renewal is not expected. While there has been external speculation linking him with a possible move to MLS, Lewandowski has made it clear that his focus is more on long term planning than on fear of retirement.

Speaking on the High Performance podcast, Robert Lewandowski explained that football, although still central to his life, no longer defines everything for him. He admitted that his career could realistically end in one, two, three or even four years, but stressed that he feels no pressure and will rely on his body to tell him when the time is right to stop.

On the pitch, however, Lewandowski continues to prove his value. He began 2026 by scoring off the bench in a 2-0 La Liga win over RCD Espanyol. He now turns his attention to the Spanish Super Cup, a competition in which he has already delivered five goals and two assists in six games for Barcelona, showing that while retirement is on his mind, his impact remains very real.
