Manchester United have dismissed Ruben Amorim after just 14 months in charge, following his public outburst after a 1-1 draw with Leeds. The decision is expected to cost around £12m, adding to previous expensive exits. United sit sixth in the Premier League, with Darren Fletcher taking interim charge.

After the dramatic fallout at Old Trafford, Manchester United have dismissed Ruben Amorim as head coach, a decision that carries significant financial and sporting consequences. The 40 year old Portuguese coach was sacked just a day after a tense 1-1 Premier League draw with Leeds United, where his post match comments openly criticised the club’s hierarchy. Amorim insisted he was hired to be the manager rather than just a coach and revealed he had always planned to leave when his contract ended in 2027, comments that accelerated his exit.

Manchester United now face a sizeable payout, with reports suggesting the sacking will cost around £12 million. This comes on top of the €11 million release clause United paid to sign Amorim from Sporting in 2024. During his 14 month spell, the club also spent heavily in the transfer market, committing roughly £262 million on new signings.

Despite the abrupt end, Amorim did guide United to a UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao and leaves the team sixth in the Premier League. Club co owner Jim Ratcliffe and the leadership group stated the change was made to give the team the best chance of a strong league finish.

Former player Darren Fletcher has been placed in temporary charge and will lead the side against Burnley, as United once again begin the search for a new long term manager.
