Germany’s all-time leading goalscorer Miroslav Klose called time on his football career on Tuesday to join the national team’s coaching staff. The striker was instrumental in his country’s World Cup victory in 2014 where he also became the record scorer in the tournament’s history with 16 goals.

"I celebrated my biggest successes in the national team, the time was wonderful and remains unforgettable so I am happy to be able to return to the DFB (German FA)," Klose said in a statement.

With 71 goals in 137 internationals, 38-year-old Klose was one of contemporary football’s feared strikers and had retired from international competition after the World Cup campaign two years ago.

"The idea has been growing in the last few months to stay on the pitch, but with a new perspective, mainly as a coach,” the Poland-born player said.

"To be able to read a game, to prepare myself meticulously, to develop strategies and tactics -- that had already really interested me as a player,” added the two-time Bundesliga winner with Bayern Munich.

Klose was without a club after his Lazio contract ended last season and was invited by Germany manager Joachim Loew to join the coaching staff.

"I am very grateful to Jogi Loew and (DFB director) Hansi Flick for this opportunity and chance to sharpen my practical skills," he said.

Klose will accompany Loew for the 2018 World Cup qualifier away to San Marino on Nov 11 and then in the friendly four days later against Italy in Milan.
