I need better understanding and assess what needs to be done, says WV Raman
Recently selected National Women’s cricket team coach WV Raman has stated that he would have to first understand each individual in the team and then assess what needs to be done. Raman was appointed as the coach by the CoA appointed three-member ad-hoc committee which included Kapil Dev.
WV Raman has steered clear from the controversy surrounding his selection process. The newly appointed coach of the women’s cricket team has a lot of coaching experience on his back as he has donned the role for a couple of Ranji teams in India’s domestic cricket. He has explained that he will first get a better understanding and then start doing what needs to be done.
“It’s a challenging opportunity. I have to get a better understanding about each individual and assess what needs to be done,” Raman told TOI on Saturday.
The appointment of Raman was not a smooth process as a difference of opinion in the two-member Committee of Administrators (COA) over his appointment has lingered on and continues even after his appointment. While CoA chief Vinod Rai wanted to appoint a coach as soon as possible, another member of the Supreme Court appointed body Diana Edulji backed the previous coach.
“I don’t want to comment. Obviously, I can only say that every coaching role has its pressures. It’s no different from what players go through, it’s a part and parcel of the role. It is not my job to worry about what is happening outside. I would like to focus on my current role.
“I would rather come in with a fresh perspective. That is how I approach the job. I am not someone who will go back in time and see what was happening and make any judgment on that. I would like to start afresh,” Raman said.
Recently the women’s cricket team has been surrounded in controversies after their exit at the Women’s T20 World Cup. Interim coach Ramesh Powar was let go but few of the young players in the team had wanted him to continue. But Raman stated that he would rather not divide players as seniors and juniors.
“I don’t see a team and bifurcate it as seniors or juniors. I would use terms like experience and inexperience. Experience has a major role to play in terms of guiding the youngsters. Sharing whatever they have learnt over a period of time is the most important bit,” he said.
