Rafael Nadal has said he and Roger Federer were not finished yet at the highest level after the duo dropped out of the top-four in the world rankings for the first time since 2003. The pair have amassed 31 grand slam singles titles between them, and form one of the greatest rivalries in tennis.

“Roger and I haven't forgotten how to play tennis and we are working to get back to competing at the highest level,” the Spanish ace said at the opening of his tennis academy in his hometown of Mallorca by the 35-year-old Swiss great on Wednesday.

Nadal is currently sixth in the world and Federer ranked eighth, but the two have been struggling with a combination of injuries and poor form.

The 30-year-old Spaniard’s season has been hindered by inconsistent form and  a wrist injury that put him out of action for three months, while Federer’s season was curtailed after Wimbledon due to a knee injury and is expected to make his return at the Hopman Cup next year.

"Sometimes continuing to play is not the solution. Sometimes the solution is to stop and restart a training programme,” said Nadal, a 14-time grand slam singles winner.

"I still have many years to come in tennis, but there is a future and this academy is part of that future,” he said of his academy that comprises 26 clay courts, as well as a fitness centre, two swimming pools and 10 paddle tennis courts.

"We were very excited to create something so special and even more so in Manacor, it is a dream come true.We hope the kids enjoy it as much as possible. We want this facility to be a success at the professional level for them, but also on a human level.”
