Novak Djokovic backs proposed rule changes in tennis
World No 1 Novak Djokovic has called for the implementation of some of the proposed changes in rules, saying it would help the sport to evolve further. 'All sports are doing everything they can in order to get their sport to the highest possible level and fulfill their potential,' Djokovic said.
Rafael Nadal opposed the idea of shortening tennis rules in order to make the sport more viable to TV audiences. Nadal felt that the sentimental values attached with the sport would be affected if done so.
Contrary to the Spaniard's views, Djokovic, on Thursday, said that different scoring methods were worth considering to make tennis easier to follow on TV.
"I think tennis has yet to fulfil its full potential. I think we are at a good state at the moment, for sure... but we still have a lot of room to get better," the Serbian said at the Shanghai Masters.
Earlier in the month, Women's Tennis Association chief Steve Simon said the governing body was considering super tie-breaks and no-ad scoring, already used in doubles, in singles matches.
Some exhibition matches play sets up to four games, rather than six, while the International Premier Tennis League had experimental rules including no 'let' serves and a timer between points.
Djokovic said that some of the rules can be changed to guide tennis in the right direction. "Some of the rules are worthy of consideration... some are not. So I guess we all have to come together and figure out the way we want to improve and evolve, because everything else is going in that direction," he said.
