It is often said, cricket is a funny game and it was on full show during the ninth game of the World Cup, where an over-excited Mushiqur Rahim granted Kane Williamson a priceless reprieve as he disturbed the bails way before he collected the ball and left Shakib and Tamim furious.

Bangladesh had posted a modest 245 runs target for the intimidating New Zealand side to chase. The Kiwi openers got off to a solid start but lost two wickets to find themselves in hot water. Kane Williamson looked cautious and was trying to get his eye in. The partnership between Ross Taylor and Williamson was the key to New Zealand’s success and Bangladesh needed to break it as soon as possible.

On the second delivery of 12th over, Taylor punched one towards mid-on and ran for the single and Williamson responded to the call but there was hardly a run there. Tamim Iqbal collected the ball in no time and threw it at the striker’s end. The trajectory of the ball suggested that the ball was hitting the stumps but an over-excited Mushfiqur while collecting the ball shattered the bails with his elbow seconds before collecting the ball. Williamson was not even in the frame, but this blunder from the keeper gave him an extra life.

Shakib knew it straight away that the opportunity has been missed and reaction said it all whereas Tamim walked up to the keeper to explain how the ball was hitting the stumps in the most animated way possible. It will be interesting to see how badly this mishap will cost Bangladesh as the Kiwi skipper has a knack of going big.
