Reports | Indian cricketers asked to relax ahead of the World Cup
After a grind in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League, Indian players have been asked to relax and come up fresh for the upcoming World Cup in England and Wales, starting on May 30. The IPL lasted for almost seven weeks during which players workload management became an important subject.
The World Cup is just a few days away and the anticipation for the same is on a high. With the prestigious trophy around the corner, all the teams are gearing up for the mega event. The Indian team, however, have asked their players to take some time off and relax before catching the flight to England on May 21.
As per a report on TOI, players have been asked to take some time off the cricket field before leaving for the World Cup.
“The players have been told that they can take a break from training after the IPL. They can rest, have fun with their close ones and come back in a good frame of mind,” a source close to the team management revealed, reported TOI.
“The support staff of the Indian team initiated this move. There were talks of having a short camp before the team leaves. But it will be very unfair on the players to get into the grind immediately after a gruelling tournament like the IPL. So, it was decided that the players rather go on a break, ideally a short vacation, so that they feel good about themselves. We can’t risk any burnout,” the source said.
The Indian Premier League not only involved matches one after the other but also a lot of hectic travelling. The source further spoke about why the yo-yo test won’t be conducted this time for the Indian side as the players are not fresh after the IPL.
“Holding a fitness test after 10 days of IPL doesn’t make sense. It is basically an endurance test. You have to be fresh to take the test. That’s why it generally happens at the start of a season or a long break. IPL takes a lot out of your body with the frequent travel and games in such hot conditions,” the source added.
