India placed with Maldives and Sri Lanka in Group A of inaugural SAFF U-18 Women's Championship

India will take on the Maldives and Sri Lanka in the inaugural edition of SAFF U-18 Women's Championship on September 28 and October 2 respectively in Bhutan. Nepal, Bangladesh, hosts Bhutan, and Pakistan will be a part of the other Group that will kick off later this month.

India, Maldives and Sri Lanka has been placed together in Group A, while Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Pakistan form Group B. The Indian women's team will start their campaign in the tournament against the Maldives on September 28 before squaring off against Sri Lanka on October 2.

The format of the tournament, allows each team to face the other teams in the group at least once. The top two teams from each group would be eligible for a place in the semifinals. The final of the maiden event will be played on October 7.

The senior women's team have a successful history in the SAFF Championships having won four editions of the event. The SAFF Championship for the same will be held in December 2018.

Ironically, the Indian senior men's team had been placed in a group that consisted of the same countries as that of the women's U-18 team. After making it through the group stage, they overwhelmed Pakistan in the semifinals before losing to the Maldives in the final by a score of 1-2.
