Robert Lewandowski revealed that Barcelona asked him to avoid scoring late last season to prevent triggering a 2.5 million euros bonus payment to Bayern Munich. He finished La Liga with 23 goals, just 2 short of the clause. The request highlighted Barcelona’s financial struggles despite winning the league title.

For the first time, Robert Lewandowski has openly spoken about an unusual situation he faced during Barcelona’s title-winning La Liga campaign last season. The Polish striker revealed that the club asked him to avoid scoring towards the end of the season due to financial concerns. According to Lewandowski, Barcelona were trying to prevent triggering a bonus payment linked to his transfer from Bayern Munich.

Lewandowski finished the league season with 23 goals. His contract reportedly included a clause stating that if he scored 2 more goals, Barcelona would have to pay an extra 2.5 million euros to Bayern. With the league title already secured and the club dealing with financial strain, Barcelona focused on saving money during the final matches.

Lewandowski confirmed that the request was purely financial and not related to sporting reasons. Speaking to journalist Bogdan Rymanowski, Lewandowski said he understood the club’s situation and had no issue with the request, even though it stayed on his mind. He admitted it was a strange feeling for a striker to think twice about scoring.
