VIDEO | Mitchell Santner shows brilliant sportsmanship; asks umpires to go upstairs after exceptional fielding effort
New Zealand cricketers have always been regarded as fine sportsmen and they have always kept the sportsmanship spirit alive on the field. Mitchell Santner proved the same today as he signaled the umpire to go upstairs despite his wonderful fielding effort seemed to have stopped a four for the hosts.
Win or loss, New Zealand have never ceased to win hearts through their acts on the field. They play cricket with a smile on their face and never try to get under anyone’s skin. It was the same attitude that brought them so many plaudits from many quarters. Today, Santner lived up to the tag when he signaled the umpires to go upstairs despite his fielding effort at the deep.
On the first ball of the 17th over, MS Dhoni played a pull shot which went towards the deep square leg where Lockie Ferguson was stationed. It was an easy chance for him to collect the ball, but the newest KKR recruit was completely clueless and couldn’t even reach the ball.
Santner was covering up for Ferguson in the deep, and seeing him fail to reach the ball, he made a dive and nicely collected the ball. When the umpire asked him if he had collected it cleanly, Santner said he wasn’t sure and it would be better in his part to go upstairs to check if his body touched the boundary line.
The replays suggested that Santner’s hand had indeed touched the boundary line and MS Dhoni was awarded four runs for it. While that worked against New Zealand, it is worth applauding what Santner did, despite having a chance to glorify himself for his effort.
