VIDEO : JP Duminy asks for review despite team not having one

Today had to be one of the most forgettable days for South African cricket as they failed to counter Indian wrist-spinning duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal and folded out for a paltry total of 118 runs in a mere 32.2 overs. However, more than the Indian bowlers’ splendid performance, South Africa’s careless batting could be reasoned as the main factor for their downfall.

One of the instances was when Duminy went for a sweep shot off Yuzvendra Chahal’s flighted delivery and missed the ball altogether and ended up being rapped on the front pad in front of the middle. It seemed like a clear LBW dismissal due to the lack of turn on the ball and umpire Adrian Holdstock didn’t waste any time to raise his finger to signal the curtains on Duminy’s stay in the middle. But surprisingly, the southpaw went for a review, forgetting that they didn’t have any review left in the innings and that one was taken by Amla in the 10th over of the innings.

On the fourth ball of the 10th over, Bhuvneshwar shortened his length a bit and angled back into the right-hander as Amla was playing from the crease. While trying to whip it towards the on-side, the former South African skipper got a faint inside nick which was easily pouched by Dhoni behind the stumps. Although umpire Aleem Dar didn't take long to raise his finger, Amla instantly reviewed it in a hope the decision to be overturned. However, UltraEdge confirmed that there was a faint edge involved and that was sufficient for the third umpire Ian Gould to rule him out. 

Even if the DRS wouldn’t have been wasted by Amla, it would also have been a wasteful review by Duminy as the HawkEye showed three-reds on it during the replays.
