When Martin Guptill dropped Aaron Finch in the second over and Usman Khawaja in the fifth over of the match, both the batsmen were yet to get off the mark. New Zealand already paid the price for dropping Babar Azam in their last match, with the Pakistani going on to score a match-winning hundred, but this time, Guptill was able to make amends for his mistake, as he pulled off a ridiculous one-handed catch diving to his left, to dismiss dangerman Steve Smith. 

After dismissing David Warner with his first ball of the match, a fired up Lockie Ferguson came steaming into a determined Smith and directed a short ball right up to his body. Despite Ferguson being pacey, the ball sat up nicely for Smith, who thought of pulling the ball just wide of the short fine leg. However, what followed next left the Aussie ace in shock, who stood there in disbelief, not able to believe his luck.

Martin Guptill, who stood at a very shortish fine leg, dived to his left and grabbed the ball out of nowhere with his left hand. After dropping two relatively easy chances, Guptill knew he had made up for the drops, as he struck a pose for the camera, while his teammates came rushing towards him. This has also been the second time this tournament that Smith has fallen to a blinder, after previously having lost his wicket against the Windies to a superhuman effort by Sheldon Cottrell.
