I took Virat Kohli's intensity and mindset in different situations from his batting, says Mayank Agarwal

Mayank Agarwal has revealed that he has tried to copy his skipper Virat Kohli’s intensity and approach to different scenarios onto his own batting. Agarwal, who is preparing to make his home Test debut against South Africa, also said that he does not pressurize himself about his spot in the team.

After a reasonably successful debut tour in Australia, Agarwal had a quiet time in the Caribbean. Although he hit one half-century, he only amassed a total of 80 runs from four innings against West Indies. However, the 28-year-old is keen to draw out positives from his first experience against the Dukes ball.

“It was a learning curve about personal expectations, different conditions and situations we came across. We played with the Duke's ball, the conditions were hot and it was a great experience to face Kemar Roach, who bowled really well in the series. What I took from Virat's batting is intensity and mindset in terms of how he looks at and reads situations. He also brings in a lot of energy. He is the guy at the forefront, leading by example,” Agarwal told TOI.

Back in India after a week away with his wife, Aashita, in Paris, Agarwal is set on preparations for the three-match Test matches against South Africa. He is hopeful of garnering in his wealth of experience from the domestic circuit and his brief stints abroad to put up a big performance.

“Playing at home is always special and I'm really looking forward to the series. There was a lot I learnt in Australia, there was even more learning in the West Indies. I'm working on what I've learnt and I'm eager to go out and put those lessons to use against South Africa and have a good series at home,” he said.

With the likes of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill waiting – and KL Rahul being dropped for his inconsistency – Agarwal knows well that he will not be getting free runs in the opening slot. However, the Karnataka-man is focused solely on how to get his bat to start talking big.

“Not really because it is more about doing what is in my control. I look at it this way: You get a game, go out there, try and put your team in a good position. If you are having a good day, try and win the match for your team. The rest will take care of itself,” Agarwal added.
