Punjab Kings beat Chennai Super Kings for the fifth time in a row, just behind Mumbai Indians in the list. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s fifty triggered CSK to post 162 runs before forties from Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw set up a comprehensive chase as PBKS beat CSK by seven wickets at the Chepauk.

Brief Scores: CSK: 162/7  [Gaikwad: 62, Rahane: 29; Chahar: 4-0-16-2] lost to PBKS: 163/3  [Bairstow: 46, Rossouw: 43; Gleeson: 3.5-0-30-1]

Winning the toss and electing to field first was backed up by economical bowling from the Punjab Kings pacer with Kagiso Rabada conceding nine runs in his couple of overs with the score reading 23/0 in four overs. CSK openers, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane up the ante by piling up 32 runs in the next two overs followed by Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar’s economical overs paved the way for back-to-back wickets in the ninth over. Chahar removed Ravindra Jadeja in the tenth over with the scoreboard reading 71/3 halfway through the innings. The spinners regulated the phase so well that CSK were left with a boundary drought for 55 balls with the economy during the middle overs phase dropped to 5.22. Eventually, Rabada ended the 37-run stand by baiting Rizvi in the 16th over, followed by Gaikwad departing after a fifty whole trying to up the ante in the 18th over. MS Dhoni and Moeen Ali produced a few boundaries despite getting dismissed to propel the score to 162/7 in 20 overs.

In response, CSK suffered an early setback in the form of injured Deepak Chahar but Richard Gleeson troubled the PBKS openers on his IPL debut, removing Prabhsimran Singh in the fourth over. Unbothered by the early blow, Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw mixed caution with aggression, to sum up a 52-run powerplay. The overseas pair notched up a 64-run second-wicket partnership before the introduction of Shivam Dube led to Bairstow’s dismissal in the tenth over. With the score reading 96/2 in ten overs, Rossouw tried to attack Shardul Thakur after a three-run eleventh over and eventually, departed for a 23-ball 43 with the score 113/3 in 12 overs. Shashank Singh and Sam Curran added 22 runs in the next two overs followed by a Mustafizur Rahman maiden over curtailing down the equation to 28 required off the five overs. Although the game got dragged to a couple of more overs, Curran and Shashank’s 50-run partnership ensured a seven-wicket triumph with 13 balls left.
