Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has submitted his application for the post of India's next head coach. It is also being understood that Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Doda Ganesh, and Lalchand Rajput have also applied for the post, with Anil Kumble gaining a direct entry into the process.

Apart from Sehwag, former India batsman Lalchand Raiput, who has earlier coached the India A side, and Tom Moody, the current coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Sri Lanka, are among the high-profile names to apply for the post. Englishman Richard Pybus, who has coached Pakistan twice in his career, has also put forward his name for the lucrative position.

Earlier, on May 25, the BCCI had invited applications for the post of ‘Head Coach’ for the Senior India Men’s Cricket Team with a deadline of May 31. Reports had suggested that a top BCCI official had also said that they had asked Sehwag to apply for the job during the recently concluded IPL.

"We have contacted Sehwag during the IPL and asked him to consider applying for the job of India coach. But he won’t be the only one applying because we expect other former players to also throw their hats in the ring," a top BCCI official was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

The official also cleared that the tenure of the next India coach will run until the next World Cup in 2019.

"The board wants to go through the process of selection of coach again. Also, the next contract is likely to run until the 2019 World Cup, so even the length of the contract has to be taken into consideration before appointing the coach. We don’t want a scenario where the players and the coach are not on the same page," said the BCCI official.
