Asian Para Games | Historic gold in archery as India reach highest ever medal tally
Harvinder Singh created a record by winning the first-ever gold in Archery for India at the Para Asian games. It was a day of records for other Indian contingents too as they beat the previous medal haul of 33 medals, set at the 2014 Asian Para Games in South Korea, with 37 medals already in pocket.
On the fifth day of the Games, Mohammad Yasser opened India's campaign in Athletics with a bronze. He started off with a throw of 13.97m, but it was his fifth throw of 14.22m that won him the medal in men’s Shot Put F46 category. The F46 category of disability covers upper limb deficiency, impaired muscle power or impaired range of movement.
Harvinder Singh won India’s first ever gold in Para archery at the games by winning the final 6-0 against his Chinese rival Zhao Lixue in the men’s individual recurve open W2/ST category. The W2 category of impairment covers athletes with paraplegia, diplegia or double leg amputation below the knee, requiring a wheelchair.
Vijay Kumar, with a glorious jump of 5.05m in his fifth attempt, pocketed silver in Men’s Long Jump T42/T61/T63 category. In chess, Kanickai Irudayaraj Jennitha Anto won silver in women’s individual Standard P1 category. Anto added her second medal of the day as she teamed up with Raju Prema Kanishsri to win bronze in Women's Team Standard P1 Category in Chess. The team of Megha Chakraborty, Punaram Tijan Gawar, and Prakash Pande Mrunali added one more bronze in Chess’ Women's team Standard VI - B2/B3 category.
