Jason Holder has stated that the Windies can still win the World Cup despite the loss against Australia by 15 runs on Sunday. The Windies now have two points in two games but have a superior net run rate over other teams due to their huge margin of victory in the game against Pakistan.

West Indies had won the toss and put Australia to bat first. The Kangaroos were reduced to 38/4 in 7.4 overs itself and managed to crawl to 147/6 in the 31st over. However, Nathan Coulter-Nile, who was dropped twice, led the charge with a quickfire 90-run innings. In reply, the Windies fell short by 15 runs despite the fact that eight batsmen reached double figures and two scored fifties. However, Jason Holder believes that his side can win the World Cup if they are a little more consistent.

“Lot of positives came out of this match. We still believe that we can win this competition. It is still early days in tournament, competition is wide open. We just have to be more consistent,” he said at the post-match presentation ceremony, reported Cricbuzz.

Coulter-Nile almost got out in the first delivery he faced as the ball missed the stumps by inches and he was even dropped on 61 in the 44th over. The skipper felt that the Australian pacer’s dropped catch made the difference.

“We dropped Coulter-Nile when he was 60 odd and he ended up getting another 30-odd runs that was one of the pivotal moments,” asserted the 27-year-old.

Chris Gayle scored 21 runs but lost his wicket to Mitchell Starc by getting out LBW. Barring him, Shimron Hetmyer, who was dismissed by a run out, and Sheldon Cottrell, all the other batsmen handed easy catches to the fielders despite getting starts. The Barbados all-rounder rued the irresponsible shots by his batsman.

“Yeah, obviously we are disappointed. Few irresponsible shots. We had to stick it around a little bit more. Batsmen should have taken responsibility and chased down the total,” Holder signed off.
