India’s magnificent run in Iran’s Makran Cup continued on Monday as many as six boxers including Commonwealth Games silver meal-winning duo of Manish Kaushik and Satish Kumar advancing to the finals. This becomes all the more special owing to the lack of medical personnel for the contingent.

National champion Kaushik beat Ashkan Reizai 4-1 in the 60 kg category on Monday evening to set-up a final showdown with Danial Baksh Shah with Tuesday being a rest day for the tournament. 91 kg stalwart Satish Kumar, who had come third clinching the bronze medal in the Asian Games, defeated Eeman Ramazan 5-0. He will face Mohammed Mlias in the summit clash.

The other pugilists to qualify for the final matches are Deepak Singh from the 49 kg category, P Lalitha Prasad of the 52 kg, Sanjeet in 91 kg, and Manjeet Singh Panghal from the 75 kg category.

Deepak had an easy match against Malek Ammari that he won 5-0 to set up a clash against Jaafer Naseri in the final. Prasad, too, had an identical scoreline against Filipino Marvin Tobamo and he will face Omid Safa Ahmadi in the final.

Last year’s India Open gold-medallist, Sanjeet came out without any scratch against Pourya Amiri with a unanimous decision of 5-0, as he would next fight Ehsan Bahani Rouz for the yellow metal. Debutant Manjeet also impressed everyone by beating Sina Safdarian to progress into the final, and he will be up against Syria’s Ahmed Ghoussoun.

Among the losers were Rohit Tokas of the 64 kg category and Duryodhan Singh Negi in the 69 kg, who lost to Bagher Faraji and Ali Moradi respectively. They finished their campaigns with bronze medals.
