India’s astounding run in the Makran Cup being held in Iran had an anti-climactic end as the boxing contingent could end with only one gold medal while the rest had to settle for silvers. The sole gold medal was won by Deepak Singh of the 49 kg category as he defeated Jaafar Naseri.

Unfortunately, Deepak’s win was the only win from the other six summit clashes in which India were participating in Chabahar, Iran. The national champions had beaten Malek Ammari quite easily with a unanimous 5-0 decision and the final was no different.

The other five pugilists, P Lalitha Prasad of the 52kg, Commonwealth Games silver-medallist Manish Kaushik from the 60kg category, Duryodhan Singh Negi  of the 69kg, Sanjeet from the 91kg category, and yet another Commonwealth Games silver-medallist Satish Kumar from +91kg category.

Manish, who has also been a national champion, was up against Danial Shah Baksh, while Satish was humbled by Mohammad Mlias. Last year’s India Open fold medalist Sanjeet lost to Eldin Ghossoun in his final bout.

Fighting against Omid Safa Ahmedi proved to be too much for Prasad, who eventually lost the bout, while Duryodhan lost to Sajjad Zadeh Kezim in the welterweight final. Previously, Rohit Tokas from the 64kg category and Manjeet Singh Panghal of the 75kg category had lost in the semis to settled for bronze medals.
