Amit Bhandari attacked for refusing to select player in U-23 team
Former India pacer and Delhi's U-23 selector Amit Bhandari was assaulted by a gang for refusing to select a player who failed on merit. The DDCA president upheld a committee for conducting the selections purely based on merit and transparency while ensuring stringent action against the assaulters.
In a grievous turn of events, Amit Bhandari, a former Indian pacer was attacked by a group of youths while he was watching a practice match ahead of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament with his fellow selectors. He was attacked by the gang because he refused to select a player - Anuj Dedha in the U-23 team.
Fellow selectors Mohan Chaturvedi and Sukhvinder Singh, and team manager Shankar Saini were present at the location but were threatened to stay out or be shot dead. Bhandari had tried to run but was chased down and physically attacked as he contained injuries in his head and legs. Moreover, the severe injuries left the selector traumatized. Dedha and his brother were arrested following the intervention of some players and security guards.
"We have registered a case of attempt to commit culpable homicide, criminal intimidation against the two men. Efforts are being made to track down the other culprits," North DCP Nupur Prasad told TOI.
However, upon interrogation, it was known that Dedha approached Bhandari requesting a place in the U-23 team but was allegedly attacked by the latter and his security guards which provoked the Delhi cricketer to ask his friends to intervene and assault Bhandari as a revenge for the refusal and the attack.
